Program Overview

Through Hubbard Street Dance Chicago’s children’s dance classes, children of all ages can experience the joy of dance: learning to use their own bodies to explore space, time and energy, exploring their own choreographic capabilities and learning from others.

Our Creative Movement curriculum allows young students to explore their developing movement skills while interacting with caregivers and peers, while older students will incorporate their expanding vocabulary and dance experience into original movement studies. For students interested in focusing on the techniques that support contemporary dance, HSDC offers classes in ballet, jazz, tap and hip-hop.

Through age appropriate movement development goals, improvisation, dance vocabulary, stories and music, our students explore all aspects of dance and learn new ways to communicate their ideas.

Come join us in an encouraging and creative environment where everyone is welcome.

Class Descriptions

Creative Movement Classes
9-18 mos (A parent/child class)
Designed for little ones just beginning to move through space. Caregivers are an essential part of this class as we bounce, swing, twirl and jump to learn more about ourselves, others and the world around us accompanied by vibrant music and stories.

18 mos–2 years (A parent/child class)
Exploring the many ways toddlers love to move, we’ll walk, run, wiggle, spin, and shake. Through familiar stories and songs, caregivers and their toddlers will groove together.

3–5 years
Join us as we explore the different ways we move our bodies through space and learn to tell stories with our movements.

5-7 years
Exploring Body, Energy, Space and Time, young dancers will gain greater understanding of how their bodies move and how to communicate meaning through dance.

7-9 years
Building on their increasingly sophisticated movement vocabulary and imaginations, students will learn the tools of choreography. Through improvisation and structured choreographic activities, these dancers will create a series of movement studies to share each session.

Dance Technique Classes
For students interested in focusing on the techniques that support contemporary dance, HSDC offers classes in ballet, jazz, tap and hip-hop. Students in the technique classes are placed by experience:

Level A:
for students with little or no experience
Level B:  for students with some experience (1 year of continuous study)
Level C:  for students with 3-5 years of continuous study.

Students should expect to stay in each level a minimum of 2 years; progress is monitored by faculty. Students in Level C should sign up for both ballet classes and at least one other technique class. Students in level B should sign up for one other technique or Creative Movement class. HSDC reserves the right to place a student in the appropriate level at any time.

Ballet
The classical dance form that can be mastered by itself or used as a technical base or supplement to other dance forms. Ballet fundamentals improve balance, posture, coordination, rhythm, and musicality. Class focuses on overall body alignment and awareness with emphasis on proper usage of feet and legs. Carriage and usage of upper torso and arms are also stressed.

Hip-Hop
The class will introduce the student to hip hop fundamentals. As students work to internalize proper body movement to music, they will develop rhythm, coordination, and motor skills.

Jazz
Ballet, tap, and jazz music are just a few influences of jazz dance, a mix of rhythm and style. Class provides a system of exercises for physical toning, strengthening, flexibility, isolations and placement. There will be a progressive warm-up, across the floor progressions including turns and jumps and a short combination that brings all of these elements together.

Tap
Class includes basic vocabulary and execution, exercises to warm and strengthen the ankles, center floor combinations using the steps, technique and rhythms that are learned as the class progresses.
